2023 Hockey World Cup : Dilip Tirkey, a former Indian hockey player, believes that the current Indian hockey team has talented players who may win the world cup again after a 47-year absence.
The next edition of the enormous event will take place in India in January of the following year. The club will have a decent chance to place third at this point. From January 13 to January 29, Bhubaneswar and Rourkela will serve as the World Cup’s hosts. In 1975 at Kuala Lumpur, Team India claimed its only World Cup victory.
Tirkey, who is also the Hockey India president said,
“The current Indian men’s team is a very confident unit and the performances they have been giving in recent years have made the fans really happy. I am confident they will do well in the World Cup. I want them to put their best foot forward and play with confidence. The team has quality players.”
Tirkey, a former captain of India who played on the team that won the gold medal at the Asian Games in 1998, has represented his country in three World Cups and as many Olympics.
The 45-year-old described his ultimate aim as competing in the Olympics and World Cups while wearing the national shirt.
Tirkey, a recipient of the Padma Shri Award in 2004. also said,
“I played my first World Cup in 1998. It was a matter of immense pride for me that I was part of the World Cup team. Captaining the Indian team was a good experience, no doubt, and we played some good hockey as well. I was captain at an Olympics, World Cup, and even an Asian Games, and it was definitely a very proud experience.”
About the veteran :
Dilip provided distinguished service to Indian hockey. Aside from the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup, he participated in three Olympics (1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney, and 2004 Athens), three World Cups, and three Asian Games. He was the second tribal player to captain India in the Olympics after Jaipal Singh Munda in 1928.
He competed for India in both the 2007 Asia Cup and the Asian Games gold medal winning teams. In 2005, he guided Hyderabad Sultans to victory in the Premier Hockey League’s debut season, which was the nation’s first hockey league, and in 2007, he steered Orissa Steelers to victory in the competition.
Before entering federation politics through a new group, the Hockey Association of Odisha, Dilip rose to the position of chairman of the Odisha Hockey Promotion Council.
