38-Year-Old Ravichandran Ashwin Stuns Fans with Spectacular Catch Against New Zealand in 3rd Test

In an extraordinary display of athleticism, 38-year-old Ravichandran Ashwin stunned spectators with what many are calling the “greatest catch of his career” during the second day of the 3rd Test between India and New Zealand at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Known more for his wizardry with the ball, Ashwin showcased his skills in the field by ending a strong 50-run stand between New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell and Will Young, a pivotal moment that shifted momentum in India’s favour.

The thrilling catch unfolded when Mitchell skied a ball from Ravindra Jadeja. Positioned at mid-on, Ashwin sprinted nearly 19 meters and launched himself into a spectacular dive to complete the catch. Speaking after the match, Ashwin humbly credited his “great hands,” adding that he was focused on getting “as close to the ball as possible.” Fans and commentators on social media were quick to label it a highlight moment of the match.

This outstanding fielding effort triggered a New Zealand collapse as the team lost five wickets for just 77 runs, finishing the day at a precarious 171/9 with a lead of 143. Jadeja led India’s bowling with four wickets, while Ashwin, back in fine form, took three, including the crucial dismissal of Glenn Phillips. The all-rounder had briefly threatened to lift New Zealand’s score, hitting Ashwin for two sixes before being deceived by a perfectly timed carrom ball that hit his stumps.

Ashwin’s fielding heroics and disciplined bowling provided a much-needed boost for India. He remarked on the unusual Wankhede pitch conditions, noting, “I expected a lot more bounce and speed… It’s not a typical Bombay pitch.” As the Test heads into its third day, India appears set to push for a decisive advantage, thanks to Ashwin’s sensational fielding and strategic bowling adjustments.
