Afghanistan lost their first T20I to Bangladesh by 61 runs

Bangladesh beat Afghanistan by 61 runs in Dhaka on Thursday, ending an eight-match losing streak in Twenty20 internationals. Nasum Ahmed and batter Liton Das both contributed significantly to the victory.

After Liton’s 60 off 44 balls, which helped Bangladesh reach 155-8, Nassum took four wickets for his best figures of the season at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium to help beat Afghanistan by 94 runs in 17.4 overs.

Earlier this year, Bangladesh had been defeated in its previous six T20Is, since the Twenty20 World Cup in Oman and the UAE last year. With this victory, Bangladesh leads the two-match series 1-0.

Nasum started the bowling for Bangladesh and got four wickets in his first appearance, giving the hosts a firm grip on the game, reducing Afghanistan to 20 for 4 in five overs.

Najibullah Zadran and captain Mohammad Nabi put on a 37-run fifth-wicket partnership before being bowled by Shakib Al Hasan.

Liton dropped Zadran on four after he hit 27 off 26 balls. Despite scoring 20 runs off 18 balls, Azmatullah Omarzai failed to get the job done.

It was enjoyable to witness how the youngsters competed in the centre with the bat and ball. The energy was also high. We believed that the total could be protected. Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah Riyad said that Nasum bowled brilliantly; it was a game-changing spell.

As a result, we lost the game after surrendering our wickets during the powerplay.” He explained.

After Mahmudullah chose to bat first, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Rashid Khan struck early, bringing Bangladesh to 25 for 2. Liton Das, on the other hand, smashed four fours and two sixes to keep the hosts in the game. The fifth wicket stand between Afif Hossain and Liton was 46 runs.

Liton’s excellent performance was ruined in the 17th over when Azmatullah collected a catch at fine leg.

In the same stadium, the second Twenty20 match will take place on Saturday.
