Champions League: Barca Crash Out Of The Champions League

Fc Barcelona crashes out of Europe’s elite competition UEFA Champions League following their 3-0 defeat at Bayer Munich, failing to make it past the group stage for the first time since the 2000/2001 season. Thomas Muller, Leroy Sane, and Jamal Musiala all scored to help the German club secure the three points.

Bayern had already confirmed first place in Group E by winning its first five matches. Barcelona, on the other hand, had a slim two-point edge over Benfica, so anything other than a win opened the door for the Portuguese club to catapult itself into second place.

The Catalans did not create a single chance in the second half and scored just twice in six group games, have lost their last two matches in all competitions following new coach Xavi’s first defeat in charge of the side by Real Betis on Saturday.

The Bavarians were struggling defensively, keeping just one clean sheet in their last eight matches prior to Wednesday. But the misfiring frontline of Barca failed to test the German defense.

Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández, speaking to Movistar: “They were better than us, they were superior. We tried our best, we pressed them high and took the ball off them but they soon overpowered us.”

Julian Nagelsmann, Bayern head coach, speaking to DAZN: “We were very dominant today. We faced a big-name opponent who actually needed to win but we never let them settle.”

What’s Next?

Bayern awaits the results of Monday’s round-of-16 draw. The German giant will be a seeded team by virtue of winning the group. By finishing third, Barcelona will fall into the Europa League.
