Delhi Capitals Pursue Shreyas Iyer as New Captain in IPL 2025

Delhi Capitals are ready to take a nostalgic turn in their search for a new captain as they prepare for the 2025 IPL season. The franchise is expected to make an aggressive bid for Shreyas Iyer, who led the Capitals before moving to Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022. With Rishabh Pant not included in Delhi’s retention list, the Capitals are in need of a captain, and Iyer—who has been promised the captaincy if signed—is at the top of their list.

Delhi Capitals, boasting the third-largest budget for the IPL 2025 auction at INR 73 crore, are positioned to make a strong bid for Iyer. Iyer recently led KKR to an IPL 2024 title and has an impressive captaincy record, making him an ideal candidate to lead the Capitals again. The GMR group, co-owners of the Delhi Capitals, are keen to bring Iyer back into the fold for the 2025 season. According to PTI, an IPL official confirmed that other teams may enter a bidding war for Iyer, hoping to drive up his price and force DC to commit a significant portion of their budget.

The Capitals see Iyer as a versatile addition, with his skills as a spin specialist in middle overs adding further value. Additionally, his leadership experience with both DC and KKR makes him a strategic asset for the Capitals, who aim to bring him back as captain. Iyer, 29, has experience leading DC and has previously taken the team to the IPL 2020 final, where they fell short against Mumbai Indians. With two IPL finals under his belt and one title victory with KKR, he is a proven leader in high-stakes matches.

KKR’s decision to release Iyer was unexpected after his successful captaincy last season, but according to KKR CEO Venky Mysore, Iyer sought a higher contract. After differences over the retention terms, Iyer opted to test his market value in the auction. As an international-caliber player and strategic leader, Iyer is expected to command significant attention in the auction, making him one of the most anticipated buys of IPL 2025.
