EURO 2022: England smash 8 past Norway, enter quarter-finals

Women’s Euro 2022: After a 1-0 win at Old Trafford in the inaugural match against Austria, the hosts England smashed 8 past fellow favorites Norway.

Beth Mead, the match winner in the first game, went up another level as she scored a hattrick for England against Norway today at the Amex Stadium, Brighton.

After a win in the first match, the sights shifted towards the game today. 2 tournament favorites went toe to toe. Everyone expected a tight clash between the two but, Sarina Wiegman players had different ideas.

Match Summary

From the get go, England were on the front foot. In the 12th minute itself, England were handed a penalty and Georgia Stanway made no mistake from the 12 yard kick to put the hosts in front.

After the goal, England started to assert more dominance. 3 minutes later, Lauren Hemp put the ball past Guro Pettersen to put the host 2-0 up.

In a span lasting 12 minutes, England had the Norway players pinned to their box. The hosts went on to score 4 more goals to make it a successful half.

Beth Mead and Ellen White scored twice each in the 12 minute span to put England 6-0 up by half-time.

This level of dominance meant that all Norway had to do, was damage limitation rather than attempt a miraculous comeback.

Unfortunately, it was Alessia Russo’ shot that rattled the Norwegian net once again as England were 7-0 up.

9 minutes from full-time, star winger, Beth Mead, tapped in a shot spilled by Guro Pettersen to complete a hat-trick and put England 8-0 up.

Post the victory, the English fans and players were seen singing the famous Neil Diamond song, Sweet Caroline.

With this win, England also became the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals. Norway take on Austria in a vital must win game for both teams, while Northern Ireland play for pride against the dominating English side.

Austria beat Northern Ireland 2-0 in the 2nd group game.

Both the matches are scheduled to be played on Saturday, 16th July.
