FIFA World Cup- Refree Sankar honoured

FIFA Worldcup- Refree Sankar honoured : FIFA WorldCup is one of the most popular sport event that happens. People from all over the globe go crazy over this tournament.

One Indian always has conflicting emotions in their head as the World Cup football approaches the new millennium, not simply pleasure.

Yes, it is none other than Mr.Komaleeswaran Sankar. He hold the pride of being the only “INDIAN” to have officiated in a FIFA World Cup.

The 2002 edition, which was co-hosted by Japan and Korea, featured an assistant referee from Chennai named K.Sankar. He played a part in Japan.

He had the opportunity to referee three games: Croatia vs. Mexico, Belgium vs. Russia, and Belgium vs. Tunisia.

The kind of high point he loves dearly to his heart was mingling with some of the biggest names in international refereeing, such Pierluigi Collina of Italy and Kim Milton Nielson of Denmark.

Since his first World Cup appearance in 2002, four editions have gone, and much has changed in the officiating profession. Sankar thinks that technology is heavily influencing refereeing today. Video aid has become more prevalent.

On Sunday, the day of the FIFA World Cup final, HE was honoured by the Kerala Sportspersons Association (KESPA) Chennai members.

Sankar was honoured during the KESPA-Velammal Nexus penalty shootout tournament’s closing ceremony, when former Indian hockey captain and Olympian V. Baskaran gave him a gift.

Sankar served as an assistant referee for three games during the 2002 World Cup: Croatia vs. Mexico, Belgium vs. Russia, and Belgium vs. Tunisia, which is still remains as dream for many people in the nation.

Time has gone by, and Sankar has since resigned from refereeing, but this one thought—along with, of course, the memorable 2002 World Cup experience—remains ingrained in his mind.

He is definitely a pride to our nation.
