Ex-Indian captain and chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar suggested that BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly shouldn’t have spoken on Virat Kohli’s captaincy saga and should have let the national selectors handle the matter in order to avoid the ongoing dispute.
Ahead of their departure to South Africa, Virat Kohli said in a media conference that no one from BCCI told him not to leave T20 captaincy, defiant to Ganguly’s claims that he had told the skipper on the issue.
“The thing is that Ganguly had no business to speak on behalf of the selection committee. Ganguly is the president of BCCI. Any issue about selection or captaincy, it’s the chairman of the selection committee who should speak,” Vengsarkar said.
Ganguly had stated that it was a joint decision by the BCCI and the selectors to select Rohit as India’s full-time ODI and T20I captain.
“It’s a call that the BCCI and the selectors took together. Actually, the BCCI had requested Virat to not step down as the T20I skipper but obviously, he did not agree. And the selectors then did not feel it right to have two different captains for two white-ball formats. So it was decided that Virat will continue as Test captain and Rohit will take over as the white-ball captain. I as President personally spoke to Virat Kohli and the chairman of selectors has also spoken to him,” Ganguly had told ANI.
