Women’s Auction to Feature 350 Players as Exclusive Women’s League Debuts in 2024-25

After a long seven-year break, the Hockey India League (HIL) is set to return in 2024-25 with an exciting new twist: the launch of an exclusive women’s league. For the first time in Indian hockey history, both men’s and women’s leagues will run alongside each other, showcasing the sport’s growing inclusivity. This landmark moment is being celebrated with the highly anticipated women’s auction on October 15, 2024, where over 350 players will compete for spots in the league’s debut season.

The auction promises to be a thrilling affair with over 250 domestic athletes and 70 international stars in the mix. Indian hockey icons like Savita, Salima Tete, Deepika, Vandana Katariya, and Lalremsiami will headline the event. Veterans such as Yogita Bali, Lilima Minz, and Namita Toppo have also registered, bringing even more star power to the table.

Internationally recognized players including Delfina Merino from Argentina, Germany’s Charlotte Stapenhorst and Nike Lorenz, as well as Australia’s Rachael Lynch, will also be part of the historic occasion, adding a global dimension to the auction.

In its inaugural season, the Women’s HIL will feature four teams: Soorma Hockey Club (Haryana and Punjab), Shrachi Rahr Bengal Tigers (West Bengal), Delhi SG Pipers (New Delhi), and Odisha Warriors (Rourkela). Two additional teams, Hyderabad Toofans and BC Jindal Group (Mumbai), are set to join in Season 2. Each team will have 24 players, including 16 Indian athletes—four of whom must be junior players—and 8 overseas players, aligning with HIL’s commitment to blending local and international talent.

Franchises will have a budget of INR 2 crores, with players grouped into three price categories: INR 10 lakhs, INR 5 lakhs, and INR 2 lakhs, ensuring a competitive and balanced bidding process.

Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey highlighted the significance of this moment, stating, “This is more than just a revival of HIL; it’s a celebration of women’s hockey and a commitment to building legacies. We’re excited to see our talent compete against the world’s best and inspire future generations.”

Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh echoed this sentiment, calling the auction a transformative event for Indian women’s sports. He emphasized that the league will showcase the finest athletes from India and beyond, serving as a platform for rising stars and encouraging young girls across the country to dream big.

The Women’s HIL 2024-25 is set to become a watershed moment for Indian hockey, driving the sport to new heights on both national and international levels.
