Rafael Nadal won the Mexican Open on Saturday, defeating Cameron Norris 6-4, 6-4 to capture his 91st ATP title and improve his career-best start to a season to 15-0. Since his return from a foot ailment that kept him out for over six months last year, the Spanish world number five has won 15 consecutive matches.
The Spanish player, who is three victories away from matching Ivan Lendl’s Open Era total of 94 after winning his third trophy in 2022, including the Australian Open, has won a total of 21 Grand Slam singles titles. Jimmy Connors has the most points (109), while Roger Federer has the fewest (103).
“It was a really humid day, very difficult circumstances,” Nadal remarked on the court.
“Cameron is a formidable opponent, but he’s also a witty guy who makes you uneasy. Nadal noted that he encountered some challenges during the match, but he “resisted and made the most of the opportunities when they came to him.”
Cameron Norrie was the first player in the match to drop his serve, as a slew of unforced errors and a wonderfully executed passing ball from Nadal gave the Spaniard a 3-2 lead in the first set, which he went on to win.
The Spaniard triumphed in Acapulco for the fourth time (2005, 2013, and 2020), where he is a fan favourite. Norrie, who was on an eight-game winning streak, was attempting to become the first British man in the tournament’s 29-year history.
