Pune, October 24, 2024 – The second Test between India and New Zealand has kicked off at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, with India making significant changes to their lineup following their eight-wicket defeat in the series opener. Among the most notable omissions is KL Rahul, who struggled in the first Test and has now been replaced by Shubman Gill.
Having lost the first Test in Bengaluru, India is under pressure to keep the series alive in this three-match contest. The loss also put India’s impressive 11-year unbeaten home record in jeopardy, a streak they have maintained since 2013. Additionally, valuable points in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) are on the line, further heightening the stakes.
New Zealand captain Tom Latham won the toss and opted to bat first on a dry Pune pitch, leaving Indian skipper Rohit Sharma admitting he would have preferred to bat as well. India has responded to their previous loss by making three key changes, aiming to bounce back and secure a crucial victory.
KL Rahul’s place in the playing XI came under scrutiny after his underwhelming performance in Bengaluru, where he managed scores of 0 and 12 in two innings. Despite being backed by head coach Gautam Gambhir ahead of the second Test, Rahul was dropped, paving the way for Shubman Gill’s return. Gill, who missed the first Test due to a neck injury, has recovered and is expected to provide a more stable presence at the top of the order.
Sarfaraz Khan’s stellar 150-run innings in Bengaluru further complicated Rahul’s case, pushing the team management to retain Sarfaraz in the lineup and look elsewhere for improvements.
In addition to Rahul, wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav and pacer Mohammed Siraj were left out of the squad. Kuldeep, who struggled in Bengaluru, leaking runs at an economy rate of over 5, was replaced by Washington Sundar. Sundar, an off-spinner and reliable lower-order batsman, provides a tactical advantage with his ability to exploit the left-handers in New Zealand’s lineup.
Mohammed Siraj, who has been inconsistent in home conditions, made way for Akash Deep. Siraj has taken 19 wickets in 13 home Tests at an average of 36, while Akash Deep, with his promising performances in recent Tests, offers India another fast-bowling option as they attempt to balance their bowling attack in Pune.
India’s new-look playing XI for this crucial second Test is as follows: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sarfaraz Khan, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Akash Deep, and Jasprit Bumrah.
New Zealand, meanwhile, has retained the same side that secured a historic victory in Bengaluru, aiming to build on their momentum.
As the second Test unfolds, both teams are well aware of the high stakes. For India, a win is essential to stay in the series and protect their home dominance. New Zealand, on the other hand, will be eager to seal the series with another strong performance. With key changes made and fresh faces in the lineup, India’s approach in Pune will be critical to their chances of levelling the series.
Stay tuned for live updates as the action unfolds in this high-stakes encounter.
