India registered a comprehensive 10-wicket win over a helpless England side in the first ODI at London’s Kennington Oval on Tuesday, July 12 to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Once the top-order collapsed on a wicket that assisted seam exceptionally well, the famed middle-order also collapsed like a pack of cards.
After it, all England could do from there was to score as many runs as possible in order to post a fighting total on the board and a valiant innings from David Willey lower down the order ensured that the Three Lions breached the 100-run mark.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma called it right at the toss and elected to bowl first. The new-ball bowlers Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah ensured that it was indeed the right move as they made the ball do the talking right from the word ‘go’.

The pace duo successfully breached the defence of the English top-order and even the middle-order failed to show any resistance.
Within no time, the reigning ODI world champions lost half their side for just 26 runs on the board. England captain Jos Buttler tried to stage a fightback, but even he could not convert his start into an impactful score and was sent back by Shami in the 15th over for 30 runs against his name.
Towards the end of the innings, David Willey (21) and Brydon Carse (15) went after the Indian bowlers, but could not hang around there for too long and were eventually bundled out for just 110 runs in the 26th over.
Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 6/19 from his 7.2 overs including three maidens at an economy of 2.6. Mohammed Shami contributed with figures of 3/31 while Prasidh Krishan chipped in with a wicket.
In reply, India reached the target, without breaking any sweat, in just the 19th over courtesy of a spectacular half-century from Rohit Sharma. Rohit remained unbeaten on 76 runs from 58 deliveries while Shikhar Dhawan played a great supporting knock and was not out on 31.
The next match between the 2 teams will be played at the Lord’s stadium on 14th July.
