Jason Roy, the England opener, has resigned from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, claiming the difficulty of remaining on the periphery of the competition for a lengthy period of time. The untimely withdrawal of Roy has dealt a major setback to the Gujarat Titans, one of the IPL’s new clubs, which paid INR 2 crore for the English opener during the IPL 2022 Mega auction.
Jason Roy notified the franchise in Ahmedabad. The Gujarat Titans are yet to find a successor for the Englishman. It’s worth noting that Roy isn’t the first player to pull out of an IPL season after being bought at auction. The Delhi Capitals offered Roy a contract worth INR 1.5 crore in 2020, but he declined owing to personal reasons.
Roy has played for the Gujarat Lions (2017), Delhi Daredevils (2018), and Sunrisers Hyderabad in (2021). He was signed as a replacement for Australia allrounder Mitchell Marsh in the 2021 auction. In 13 IPL games, Roy has scored 329 runs at an average of 29.90 and a strike rate of 129.01.
Roy was the Quetta Gladiators’ leading run-scorer in the just concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2022, which was also played inside a biosecure bubble. Roy scored 303 runs at an average of 50.50 and a strike rate of 170.22 while scoring two fifties and a hundred.
