Joe Root wins ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the year

Joe Root, England’s test captain, has been awarded the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for 2021. He is the second English batsman to win this award after his former teammate Alastair Cook in 2011. In 15 matches, the right-handed batsmen scored 1708 runs for a total of 2021 runs. In 2021, he has six hundred and has played a vital role in England’s batting.

It is only the third player in the history of test cricket to reach 1700 runs in a calendar year. Only Mohammad Yousuf and Sir Vivian Richards are ranked higher.

Root’s innings in Galle against Sri Lanka, and against India in Chennai as well as lords, were some of the best innings witnessed in the modern era.

As well as Root, ICC MEN’S Test Cricketer of 2021 Ravichandra Ashwin, New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jamieson and Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne were also on hand.

As Joe Root is leading everywhere, this has been a hard year for England as they face defeats to India, New Zealand, and Australia. The innings in Galle against Sri Lanka and against India in Chennai as well as lords are some of the best innings in the modern era.

“I am incredibly proud to receive this award. If there was one hundred that really sticks out it would probably be in Chennai against India, with it being my 100th game it is something that will live long in the memory.” Root said.
