Lakshya Sen looks to lift German Open after beating Olympic Champion
20 year old Indian Badminton player Lakshya Sen has managed to pull off a major upset as he defeated the current Olympic champion and world number one Viktor Axelsen of Denmark in a thrilling three round match in the semi-finals of the German Open on Saturday. The youngster won the game against all odds and will squaring off against Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the final where he will be looking forward to win his second title of the season.
Lakshya has a decent 3-3 record against his final opponent with the last encounter going in his favour when he beat him in last year’s Hylo Open.
Lakshya Sen had to work very hard to reach the German Open final as he fought for more than an hour and managed to take the match with a score of 21-13, 12-21, 22-20. It was a victory that would’ve meant a bit more for the young Indian as this was the world number 12’s first win against Viktor who earlier had a 4-0 head to head lead against him.
It was all very tense until the last game which was the tie-breaker. After the score coming to 6-6, Viktor gained some momentum and led 15-8 at one point. However, the Indian fought back in style and was able to put together valuable points in the end to level it at 20-20. After that it was winner takes all for both the players and Lakshya stepped up to the occasion and bagged consecutive two points to go through to the final.
