Mumbai Wins Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024

Mumbai has yet again unearthed a cricketing gem while adding another Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy to their overcrowded cabinet. The 2024 final against Madhya Pradesh was sealed in style as Suryansh Shedge’s explosive unbeaten 36 off 15 balls, paired with Atharva Ankolekar’s six to finish, led Mumbai to chase down 175 with 13 balls to spare. Shedge’s dazzling performance showcased why he is Mumbai’s latest rising star, delivering three crucial knocks in his last four innings.

Shedge’s cameo included three boundaries and three sixes, one of which was a jaw-dropping swipe off Venkatesh Iyer that soared over long leg, reminiscent of Suryakumar Yadav’s brilliance. His late flourish, combined with a blistering 51-run partnership in just 19 balls with Ankolekar, all but ensured Mumbai’s second Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title.

The foundation for the chase was laid by Suryakumar Yadav and Ajinkya Rahane, who ended the tournament as the highest run-scorer. After Mumbai stumbled to 47/2 in the fifth over, the duo added a stabilizing 52-run stand for the third wicket. Although Rahane got a reprieve early on, he made steady contributions with 37 runs, while Suryakumar accelerated the innings with his trademark scoops and lofted shots, scoring a vital 48.

Mumbai faced a tricky situation when Suryakumar departed, leaving them needing 46 runs off 32 balls. But Shedge and Ankolekar ensured there were no hiccups, steering Mumbai to a memorable win.

Madhya Pradesh’s captain, Rajat Patidar, was the lone warrior, smashing an unbeaten 81 off 40 balls, packed with six fours and six sixes. His fearless T20 hitting powered MP to a competitive total, with 80 runs coming off the last seven overs. Patidar’s pull shots, lofts, and upper cuts had the Chinnaswamy crowd roaring, but his heroics couldn’t stop Mumbai’s march to victory.

With yet another Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy triumph, Mumbai continues to showcase their dominance in Indian domestic cricket. The rise of young talents like Shedge alongside seasoned performers like Rahane and Suryakumar bodes well for the team’s future, solidifying their reputation as a powerhouse in T20 cricket.
