Nitish Kumar Reddy’s Maiden Test Century at MCG: A Proud Moment for Coach Kumar Swamy

Nitish Kumar Reddy’s stellar maiden Test century at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Day 3 of the Boxing Day Test against Australia has captured the attention of cricket fans worldwide. On December 28, the young all-rounder showcased his batting brilliance, scoring an unbeaten 105 off 176 balls with ten boundaries and one towering six, keeping India alive in the Test match.

Reddy’s under-16 coach, Kumar Swamy, couldn’t contain his excitement as he witnessed his student etching his name in the history books. Speaking about Reddy’s remarkable journey, Swamy recalled how it all began 12 years ago when the budding cricketer was selected for the Andhra U-14 state team.

“This is an incredibly proud moment for me as his coach. Nitish has always been a hardworking player who never looked back after his first selection. I still remember the time he couldn’t get a photograph with his idol, Virat Kohli. Today, he’s sharing a dressing room with him—it’s a dream come true,” Swamy told ANI.

Nitish Kumar Reddy’s century not only marked a personal milestone but also established him as India’s highest run-scorer in the series. With 284 runs in six innings at an average of 71, Reddy has emerged as a key player in India’s campaign during this Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

India found themselves in dire straits at 221/7, trailing Australia by 253 runs when Nitish Reddy and Washington Sundar joined forces. Their heroic 127-run partnership for the eighth wicket proved to be a turning point. While Reddy held one end with his magnificent century, Sundar contributed a crucial 50, helping India avoid the follow-on and significantly reduce the deficit.

By stumps on Day 3, India had reached 358/9, trailing Australia by just 116 runs. Reddy’s composed knock and Sundar’s resilience ensured that the team remained in contention in this high-stakes encounter.
