Pele – The Football icon passes away at age 82

Pele – The Football icon passes away at age 82: Pele, the only player in history to win three World Cups, passed away today at the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo after a battle with cancer; he rose to prominence in the sport after defeating the host nation of Sweden in the 1958 World Cup final with two goals.

With 77 goals in 92 games, Pele is one of Brazil’s all-time leading scorers. He rose to fame after Brazil won the 1958 World Cup as a 17-year-old, defeating hosts Sweden with two goals in the final.

On Thursday, Pele’s official Twitter account posted the following:

“Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pelé, who peacefully passed away today. Love, love and love, forever.”

His face appeared tired and worn-out in a photo shot with his children and grandkids only days before he passed away, as if the passage of time had taken a toll on both his appearance and demeanour.
However, there was still a shine when he smiled that enduring bright-eyed smile of his, an ageless, everlasting radiance that perhaps not even death could snuff out.
Pele didn’t actually pass away. It was Edson Arantes do Nascimento, a centre-forward like his father Dondiho but with no experience in professional football, who was given the name after the American physicist Thomas Alva Edison.
Furthermore, it was accomplished in accordance with Pele’s wishes, who always addressed himself in the third person.
It’s a name that is both eternal and unbreakable, as constant as possibly the lovely game he made even more beautiful, and as all-pervasive as the sun and the stars. He really does exist as the sun, bringing light and vitality to football consciousness.
A total of 1,279 goals (or is it 1,284), 92 hat tricks, three World Cups, and hundreds of medals and trophies come to life in his glow.
The memories he left behind on the football field with the tiny ball would be unmatched for magic and intuition, power and poise, strength and grace, balance and vision, audacity and imagination. It’s a shame that most of Pele’s magic only exists as grainy reels, memories of old-timers, or pure myth.
