PR Sreejesh, the goalkeeper for the Indian men’s hockey team, celebrated his 250th international cap on social media on Monday. On Sunday, during India’s FIH Hockey Pro League match against Spain at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Odisha, the veteran player achieved a major milestone.
The 33-year-old goalkeeper made his India debut in 2006 in the South Asian Games in Sri Lanka, but it took him till 2011 to earn a starting spot. In the same year, he made two game-winning saves in the Asian Champions Trophy final against Pakistan.
Over the course of his illustrious career, Sreejesh has won numerous awards, including Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament at the 2013 Asia Cup and the 2014 Champions Trophy.
In 2016, he led India to a silver medal at the FIH Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy, and he led India to a silver medal in 2018.
He also led India to a bronze medal in the 2018 Asian Games and was instrumental in their bronze medal achievement at the Tokyo Olympics.
In 2015, he was awarded the Arjuna Award, and in 2017, he was given the Padma Shri. In the year 2021, he was also honoured with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
