Rohit Sharma, who will take over the captaincy of the Indian team in the first Test at Mohali, affirmed that Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane would remain in the team’s future plans, but said that filling their shoes would be difficult.
In India’s test series against Sri Lanka, Rahane and Pujara were left out of the squad. When asked about Rahane and Pujara’s future with the Test team, Rohit stated that both played a significant role in India’s rise to No. 1 in the longest format of the game.
There are a lot of big shoes to fill in Rahane’s and Pujara’s shoes, and whoever comes in will have difficulty filling them. To be honest, I don’t know who will fill those shoes. In a virtual press conference, Rohit acknowledged his hard work over the years, playing over 80-90 international tests and winning numerous titles. Individuals aided us in reaching No. 1 in Tests, and they played a key role in this.
These men will undoubtedly be considered in the future; they will be included in our plans. We did not consider them for the time being, as the selector also mentioned. “There’s no reason to believe they won’t be considered for the series again,” he continued.
When asked who his ideal opening partner would be in the absence of KL Rahul, Rohit said, “I am a captain. I’d like everyone to be in the squad.” We’ll look at everything, examine everything, and then decide. Mayank, Shubman, Shreyas, and Vihari are all exceptional players who represent the future of India.
“I feel they need a good warm-up to thrive in this format, and it is vital that we achieve that.” It will begin with management giving enough support and backing, so ideally, these folks, with enough backing, not just from me, but also from you guys, can help, “he said.
