Hockey India has announced an 18-member squad for the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy, with Salima Tete set to lead the team in the tournament from November 11 to 20 in Rajgir, Bihar. As defending champions, India aims to retain the title they secured last year by defeating Japan 4-0 in the final.
Salima Tete, a dynamic midfielder, expressed excitement about captaining the team, saying, “It’s an incredible feeling to lead the team into another major tournament, especially as defending champions. We’ve trained rigorously with a mix of experienced players and young talent.” Vice-captain Navneet Kaur will join Tete in leadership, bringing additional depth to India’s strong lineup.
India will kick off its campaign against Malaysia on November 11, followed by matches against Korea, Thailand, China, and Japan. The squad features a balanced mix of players, with experienced goalkeeper Savita sharing duties with Bichu Devi Kharibam. The defense includes Udita, Jyoti, Ishika Chaudhary, Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, and Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke.
Midfield support for Tete will come from Neha, Sharmila Devi, Manisha Chauhan, Sunelita Toppo, and Lalremsiami. Meanwhile, the forward line, led by Navneet Kaur, includes Sangita Kumari, Deepika, Preeti Dubey, and Beauty Dungdung, who returns post-rehabilitation alongside Sushila, boosting India’s attacking prowess.
India will face tough competition from top Asian teams, including Olympic silver medalists China.
