Sania Mirza announced her retirement ?

Indian star player Sania Mirza announced her retirement from tennis sports after the current season of Australian Open. Sania Mirza made the announcement after she and her Ukrainian partner Nadiia Kichenok suffered
an opening-round loss in the women’s doubles event of the ongoing Australian Open on
Wednesday. Sania Mirza is India’s most successful female tennis player. Mirza is the first Indian woman to
win a Grand Slam. She has won Majors in doubles along with medals at the Asian Games and
Commonwealth Games. The last time she won a Slam was at the 2016 Australian Open with Martina Hingis. Currently,
she is ranked 68th in the world. She has won 14 medals across all multi-sports events. There are six gold medals in the
collection. Seven medals have been won by her in both the women’s and mixed doubles categories at
different Asian Games. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, Mirza also won a silver medal in the Women’s
Singles and a bronze medal in the Women’s Doubles. Mahesh Bhupathi partnered with Sania
Mirza to win the Australian Open (2009) and the French Open (2012).
There’s a bunch of reasons for it. I do feel my recovery is taking longer and considering my son
is three years old, I do feel I am putting him at risk by travelling so much with him.
Unfortunately, the pandemic is making us take certain decision for the well-being of ourselves
and family,” Mirza said.
Sania and her doubles partner Nadiia Kichenok were upstaged by Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek
and Kaja Juvan in the first round of the Australian Open. Sania will next compete in the mixed
doubles with Rajeev Ram. “My body is wearing down. My knee was really hurting today and I’m
not saying that’s the reason we lost but I do think that it is taking time to recover as I’m getting
older,” she added. Sania won three Grand Slam titles with Swiss icon Martina Hingis.
