Smriti Mandhana, India’s opener, has been granted permission to compete in the ICC Women’s World Cup after suffering a head injury during the team’s first warm-up match against South Africa. In India’s first warm-up match, in which India won by two runs, Mandhana was hit in the head by a bouncer from Shabnim Ismail. In a report by the ICC, it was found that Mandhana, 25, was treated by the team’s doctor following the incident and was cleared to continue, only to withdraw injured an hour and a half later.
According to the report, the left-hander did not have any concussion symptoms at the time, nor did he suffer any long-term repercussions from the collision. Prior to the next 50-over extravaganza, the graceful hitter was in fine form, scoring her 20th half-century in the last ODI against New Zealand.
Mandhana has 2461 runs and four centuries in 64 One-Day Internationals.
Before facing Pakistan in the World Cup on March 6, India will play another warm-up match against the West Indies.
In all, India scored 244 for 9 against South Africa in a warm-up match, led by Harmanpreet Kaur’s century and Yastika Bhatia’s score of 58 runs.
Luus and Laura Wolvaardt gave half-centuries, but they couldn’t push the side over the line, as left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad took 4 for 46 in 10 overs.
