On Sunday, India’s men’s doubles team of Rohan Bopanna and Ramkumar Ramanathan won the Maharashtra Open in Pune, claiming the ATP 250 doubles title. After winning their first title together in Adelaide last month, the Indian combo overcame top-seeded Australian pair Luke Saville and John-Patrick Smith to capture their second title on the tour in 2022.
In one hour and 44 minutes, Bopanna and Ramkumar, known as RamBo at the Maharashtra Open, overcame a 6-7(10), 6-3, 10-6 deficit to win 6-7(10), 6-3, 10-6.
Last month, in the lead-up to the Australian Open, Bopanna and Ramkumar won the Adelaide event as a team for the first time on the ATP Tour.
It was Bopanna’s 21st ATP doubles victory, while Ramkumar’s second trophy at this level will propel him into the top-100 in doubles for the first time in his career.
The contest began with big serves, with only Ramkumar and Luke losing a point in the opening four games.
In the fifth game, Bopanna’s volley blunder on a Luke return made it 30-all, but Ramkumar responded with an ace and another massive serve to take a 3-2 lead. When Luke made an error while attempting an overhead volley at 40-30 in the next game, the Indian team had a chance to break Patrick-serve, Smith’s but the opportunity was missed as the Australian pulled off a massive serve on deuce point.
In the ninth game, the Australians created a breakpoint opportunity on Ramkumar’s serve by finding two service return winners and the Indian serving a double fault at 40-30, but the home team held.
Patrick-solid Smith’s hold at love tied the game at 5-5.
The opening set had to be decided by a tie-break in the end. Both teams squandered a number of set points, with the Indians squandering two and the Australians converting their third. When Bopanna produced an unforced error at 10-all and Ramkumar missed a forehand on set point, they had a chance.
The Indian duo needed a good start in the second set, and they got it when Luke’s serve was broken in the third game after the Australian committed a volley error on deuce point.
In the next game, Bopanna saved a break opportunity on his serve to retain their lead. In the ninth game, Patrick-Smith was serving to stay in the set when he was broken, allowing the Indian team to force a Super Tie Breaker.
A thrilling rally ensued between the two pairs at 30-all. When Luke blinked, India was awarded the first set point, which they easily converted when Bopanna smashed a volley winner.
To win the title, Bopanna and Ramkumar dominated the Super Tiebreak. They split the prize money of USD 16370 and each received 250 ranking points.
