We never came across campaigns like ‘Meet The Champion’ to make us understand the value of Santulit Aahar: Tarundeep Rai

Importance of nutrition was understood only when I came across a dietician in 2015 during camp at JLN, Delhi.Carrying forward the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on creating a new, healthier and fitter India, Tokyo Olympian Tarundeep Rai interacted with students from 75 schools during the unique campaign on Santulit Aahar – ‘Meet The Champion’ on Wednesday at Namchi in Sikkim.
The Indian recurve archer who also hails from Namchi was given a rousing welcome by nearly 200 students gathered at Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School from across the district. The interaction started with an Audio-Visual message of the Prime Minister which highlighted his mission of generating awareness on balance diet and fitness among the future generation of the country. Speaking on the occasion, the star archer said, “It was only after my first two Olympic Games in 2004 and 2012 where I could not deliver my best made, I realised that there was something where I was lagging behind irrespective of so much training and practice. Yes, it was the nutrition!”

He also added that he understood the importance of a proper and balanced diet very late in his life as during those years there wasn’t any awareness regarding nutrition as a key factor in a sportsperson’s life.

Apart from that, the Olympian also shared tips on eating right, correct fitness regime and also vital life lessons he had gained in his sports journey. Meanwhile, students were also engaged in a Fit India Quiz session creating more fun to the programme.

The day became worth remembering for the students when they were given a chance interact with the three-time Olympian, sharing their thoughts and questions. While responding to one of the student’s question related to his mental strength during his shoulder injury, the Padma Shri recipient said, “Initially, it was difficult to deal with the injury but as I already mentioned that I could sense that I was missing out on something. Later, it was in the year 2015, when I was at a camp in Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium, Delhi, it was to my surprise that we were facilitated with a Dietician. It was for the first time, I realised nutrition can have such significance in our lives and could figure out why I faced the health issues.”

“During our childhood, we never came across campaigns like ‘Meet The Champion’ to make us understand the value of Santulit Aahar. So, consider yourself to be lucky and bring the change,” he added.

Tarundeep also showcased his sports skills and played volleyball with the students in the outdoor field of the school premises.

Notably, this noble initiative is being taken up by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, GoI in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, GoI and is also a part of the government’s ‘Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’.
