West Indies recall Shimron Hetmyer and Oshane Thomas for ODI

West Indies have recalled Shimron Hetmyer and Oshane Thomas into the ODI squad for the three-match series against India. According to a Cricket West Indies release, Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder are unavailable for selection, while Keemo Paul is out injured.

Fast bowler Jayden Seales and legspinner Yannic Cariah are also back following their rehab after surgery, while left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie returns having recovered from his lower-back injury.

Hetmyer was left out of the West Indies’ ODI World Cup Qualifier squad in May despite having made himself available for selection because the management wanted to give a longer run to the players who had performed well in the series leading up to it. West Indies failed to qualify for the main event after losing four out of seven games in the Qualifier. Hetmyer last played for West Indies in the home T20I series against New Zealand in August 2022. His last ODI was in July 2021, against Australia in Barbados.

Fast bowler Thomas, meanwhile, last played for West Indies in December 2021 and has been out of contention in recent times with fitness issues. He last played competitive cricket in 2022, when he turned up for Falcons in the Lanka Premier League.

“We welcome Oshane and Shimron back into the group,” chief selector Desmond Haynes said. “Both have played at the international level before, with some success, and we believe they will fit well into the set-up. Oshane brings pace and is a potential wicket-taker with the new ball. Shimron’s style of batting will offer a lot especially in the middle stage of the innings and he is also a potential ‘finisher’.”

Kensington Oval in Barbados is set to host the first two matches on July 27 and 29 respectively, while the third and final ODI will be played at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad on August 1. A four-day camp was held at Kensington Oval to prepare the white-ball players for the series.
