Former Team India head coach Ravi Shastri has revealed that the team selected for the 2019 ODI World Cup defected a ton to be desired. He was especially puzzled by the decision to choose three wicketkeepers. Shastri, regardless, said that he never meddled in selecting topics.
Earlier, in the 2019 World Cup selection of India’s team started a massive rage in the Indian cricket professionals. The lovers and former cricketers took to Twitter and hit out at the selecting committee’s judgment.
Ravi Shastri in an interview has revealed that either Ambati Rayudu or Shreyas Iyer should have been picked rather than three wicket-keepers.
“I had no say in that (team selection). But I wasn’t okay with three wicketkeepers being picked for the World Cup. Either Ambati or Shreyas could’ve come in. What was the logic in having MS Dhoni, Rishabh [Pant], and Dinesh [Karthik] altogether?,” said Shastri.
Shastri said he had “no say” in the selection but did consent that either Rayudu or Shreyas Iyer “could’ve come in” to the team as an expert middle-order batsman. The No.4 batsman in the charge up to that World Cup was one of India’s main troubles and regardless of pushing out diverse choices in Rayudu, Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant, the team administration did not find acceptable outcomes.
The former head coach also said that he never meddled in the team’s choice.
“But I never interfered with the selectors’ work, except when I was asked for feedback or as part of a general discussion,” he said. “What was the logic in having MS Dhoni, Rishabh [Pant], and Dinesh [Karthik] altogether?”, remarked Shastri.
“I’m not so rankled by the 2021 T20 WC exit – to be honest, we weren’t among the best sides. But 2019 hurts equally bad. The start we had, then the game being carried on to the next day,” he added.
